THE ICEMAN

While it deserved stronger direction and a more fully realized script, Michael Shannon’s riveting performance in the title role is more than enough to make The Iceman recommended viewing.

“The new Museum Quarter will create a synthesis of city and nature, of history and future, of building and landscape, of culture, leisure, and knowledge,” said Kjetil Trædal Thorsen, founding partner of Snøhetta.

“Visitors can meet Ötzi the Iceman on top of the Virgil mountain, a place with a historic atmosphere. In addition, the new Virgil cable car system and the Museum Quarter will provide spaces of cultural significance and recreational value next to the city center of Bolzano.”

Snøhetta’s proposal imagines the Museum Quarter as an elongated structure that projects out from the mountain to echo its topography.

It would connect to the ring-shaped cable car station via a central plaza, which will be used as a space for open-air markets and concerts.

This plaza will be lined with a mix of seating areas, and lead up to the museum’s stepped roof that provides panoramic views of Bolzano and its mountainscape.

A secluded entrance to the pair of museums will puncture the hillside, leading into a joint foyer area.

Snøhetta has also proposed developing and landscape the area surrounding the scheme to make the mountain more accessible for walking, hiking, and biking.

“Through the planned cable car structure and the new Museum Quarter, the Virgil mountain will serve as a cultural and recreational area for the people and visitors of Bolzano,” added the architecture studio.

“The new Museum Quarter will establish a new landmark for Bolzano and reinforce the city’s international significance as a cultural destination.”

Snøhetta has designed a new Museum Quarter for Bolzano, Italy that will be home to Ötzi the Iceman. Sited atop Virgl mountain, the project would overlook the city and connect to the new Bolzano cable car. As an open landmark, the Museum Quarter was made to serve as a terrace for Bolzano. The elevated museum and park will include exhibition and collection space around the iconic 5,300-year old glacier mummy.

Designed for the Signa Group, the new Bolzano Quarter combines museum spaces for the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology and the Municipal Museum of Bolzano. It’s proposed site atop the Virgl mountain is an important location for the South Tyrolean capital due to its cultural and historical significance and with its prehistoric and Roman traces. The building was designed to blend into the surrounding topography and extend the mountain terrain. Arriving from the station, visitors can enter both museums through open space on the roof and a joint foyer. The squared roof will act as a public space for diverse programs, from open-air markets to concerts.

“The new Museum Quarter will create a synthesis of city and nature, of history and future, of building and landscape, of culture, leisure, and knowledge,” says Kjetil Trædal Thorsen, Founding Partner of Snøhetta. “Visitors can meet Ötzi the Iceman, one of the most important archaeological discoveries, on top of the Virgil mountain – a place with a historic atmosphere. They will literally slip under the skin of the mountain, entering it to see the Iceman. In addition, the new Virgil cable car system and the Museum Quarter will provide spaces of cultural significance and recreational value next to the city center of Bolzano”.

The project centers on Ötzi the Iceman, who was preserved in ice at an elevation of 3,210 meters. In 1991, Ötzi was found with his clothing and equipment still intact, providing a unique glimpse into the life of a man of the Copper Age. Through the planned cable car structure and the new Museum Quarter, the Virgil mountain will serve as a cultural and recreational area for the people and visitors of Bolzano. The Museum Quarter aims to establish an open landmark for Bolzano and reinforce the city’s international significance as a cultural destination.

The hitman who shot dead John Kinsella and Paul Massey have launched an appeal against his whole life sentence.

Liverpool Crown Court heard how Mark Fellows was the gunman who carried out the clinical executions of Kinsella and Massey, who were close friends.

Judge Mr. Justice William Davis sentenced Mark Fellows to a full life sentence for the murders, which took place during a vicious gang war rooted in Salford.

The judge chose not to give Fellows a minimum jail term, which means he will never be considered for release and is likely to die behind bars.

Snøhetta has announced their new project proposal for the Museum Quarter in Bolzano. Nestled within Bolzano’s capital in Northern Italy the building’s location is set to be on top of Virgolo/Virgil Mountain. In conjunction with Bolzano’s new cable car structure, also designed by Snøhetta, the new landmark will serve as an immersive public space for the city’s inhabitants.Museum Quarter in Bolzano; Image © moka-studio & Snøhetta

The museum’s future site has a significant historical significance to the capital. In 1976, the city’s history funicular closed which made the mountains access unavailable to the public. From its lush green space to the prehistoric and Roman traces of the South Tyrolean capitol the museum will allow for the space to become accessible to visitors after nearly forty years. The Museum Quarter will also accommodate the South Tyrol Museum of Archeology and the Municipal Museum of Bolzano.

According to Kjetil Trædal Thorsen, Founding Partner of Snøhetta, “The new Museum Quarter will create a synthesis of city and nature, of history and future, of building and landscape, of culture, leisure, and knowledge. Visitors can meet Ötzi the Iceman, one of the most important archaeological discoveries, on top of the Virgl mountain – a place with a historic atmosphere. They will literally slip under the skin of the mountain, entering it to see the Iceman. In addition, the new Virgl cable car system and the Museum Quarter will provide spaces of cultural significance and recreational value next to the city center of Bolzano.”

Serving as a cultural and recreational area the museum’s design blends with the mountain’s terrain and topography. Its elongated form and ring-shaped center station create an exciting ensemble. A highlight is the museum’s roof terrace which not only provides impressive views of the city but also acts as a great public space for many to enjoy.

Film synopsis :

At first glance, FOR LOVE OR MONEY looks like a holdover from the greed-filled 1980s, a last gasp glorification of Reagan/Bush era yuppiedom. The surprise is that it’s actually an amusing, if occasionally formulaic, comedy.

Michael J. Fox is Doug Ireland, a cunning-yet-lovable concierge at New York’s posh Bradbury Hotel. Doug knows all the angles, from where to get jewelry wholesale to how to procure hard-to-get theater tickets, but he doesn’t quite have the knack for romance. Andy (Gabrielle Anwar), the department

store salesgirl on whom he has a crush, humors him but won’t agree to a date. David has two dreams: to win Andy, and have his own hotel.

When mogul Christian Hanover (Anthony Higgins) arrives at the Bradbury, Doug sees his golden opportunity. He hopes to score points when he’s entrusted with keeping an eye on Hanover’s mistress, whom he’s distressed to learn is Andy. Doug is now torn between his attraction to Andy, who he thinks

an important party. Eventually Doug learns that Hanover is not only using him as well, but is planning to purchase the land Doug had envisioned for his hotel in order to build his own palatial establishment. Thanks to an unexpected ally, Doug foils Hanover and wins Andy, who realizes that Doug was

the guy for her all along.

To the degree that it succeeds (the last half feels a bit forced), FOR LOVE OR MONEY does so on the strength of Fox’s snappy performance. Not unlike the young Jimmy Cagney, he hardly stops to breathe in some scenes, notably in the sequence–played like an elaborate three-card-monte game–in

which he and the other local concierges buy and sell theater tickets from each other. There are some original comedic touches (Fox’s sparse city apartment includes several fishtanks full of Chinese duck sauce packets), and the action moves along so quickly that one doesn’t pay much attention to

the plot’s plausibility. In any event, it’s no more unbelievable than some of the classic screwball comedies of the ’30s and ’40s, which it resembles in its pacing and colorful characters. The hotel is stocked with several, including the ancient bellhop (Fyvush Finkel of TV’s “Picket Fences”) who

prides himself on being able to take every piece of a guest’s luggage to the room in one trip. Michael Tucker (“LA Law”) has a small part as a naive out-of-towner trying to rejuvenate his marriage, and Fox’s trip with him to the wholesale jewelry exchange is one of the film’s highlights, with Fox

and the dealer exchanging insults while each attempts to get a better price. Gabrielle Anwar, though sometimes a bit too childlike, gives a refreshingly low-key performance, and her natural chemistry with Fox adds to the film’s appeal, helping to raise it above its fairly familiar elements.

The Pierre Hotel (New York City) appears in a famous American romantic comedy film “For love or money” (“Concierge”) (1993) under the name of a luxury Bradbury Hotel. The plot of the film is centered on the main character, who works as a concierge at the Bradbury Hotel, fulfilling a huge amount of various duties. It is possible to enjoy all the beauty of the hotel because it is presented in different settings and storylines.

The reason why the movie has two official titles is simple: two major aspects of the plot are emphasized by their titles, i.e. the job position and the choice made by the main character. This film deeply shows life in the hospitality industry, which is so diverse, dynamic, interesting and attractive.

Film synopsis :

Someone is killing the cast and crew around the production of a gay French porn in “Knife + Heart,” which provides an inspired opportunity to set an erotic thriller within the milieu of vintage Parisian blue movies. In the hands of gifted French director Yann Gonzalez, who leaps from Critics’ Week to the official competition with this hyper-stylized follow-up to “You and the Night,” an environment that might have once given exploitation helmers the excuse to stage some red-blooded voyeurism (in the “Body Double” or “Crimes of Passion”) instead of the hottest tickets for gay audiences this year.

Picture “Cruising” as directed by Brian De Palma, and you’ll have a pretty good idea of what to expect from this frisky parody-homage, which is equal parts kinky and kitsch, rendered with the kind of meticulous attention to lighting, composition , and sound (including a meeting with M83, who also scored Gonzalez’s first film) that all but guarantees a cult following. The title hints at extreme passions of both the romantic and homicidal variety brought to the boil over the summer of 1979 – although frankly, a knife in the heart is perhaps the most pleasant way to go for the victims of a serial killer who alternately employs a switchblade dildo and a deep-throat ramrod.

Film Review:

While the murders are graphic, the sexuality is not, as Gonzalez presents an almost playful idea of what happened for gay porn at the time. In preparing the project, I have delved deep into his research, coming upon the story of a female director who, in addition to notorious tyrant on set, nursed a powerful attraction to the editor with whom she worked. This presents yet another unique situation for Gonzalez, who takes the chance to stage a tragic lesbian love story in this otherwise all-male underworld.

With her anime-big eyes and squeaky-balloon voice, gap-toothed pixie Vanessa Paradis may not be the obvious choice to play Anne Pareze, but she’s an icon in her own right, serving as a wonderfully unconventional matriarchal figure for this misfit band of lost children – a mix of “real” men she spots at construction sites and flamboyant types recruited at the gay bars she frequents. Oddly enough, she never asks to see anyone’s genitalia, which is just as well, because there’s no evidence that she ever shows her equipment in her films. She’s strictly a soft-core author, blending the corniest of exposition with the kind of quasi-symbolic imagery one might expect to find in a student film – including a burning cabin that plays a central role in the murderer’s intentions.

This is a rare case of a film where the movie-within-the-movie scenes appear less impressionistic than the footage that surrounds them, a balance established from the opening scene, in which Anne’s lover Lois (Kate Moran) assembles a 16mm forest encounter on a flatbed editor – one of those Tom of Finland-style scenarios where two men get familiar in the woods while a third looks on from behind the bushes.

Cut, shoot, mix – the very language of cinema is brutal, and Gonzalez taps into that energy via an elaborate montage, alternating between Lois’ work and the killer’s first murder. Seen only in an intimidating leather fetish mask, the mysterious villain lurks in the corner of a gay sex club (more convincing than the one James Franco staged for “Interior Leather Bar.”) And lures the ringlet-haired twink whose scene Lois is working on a room where the BDSM play takes a violent turn.

The trouble here – and with every attack that follows – is the complete lack of suspense. Gonzalez has mastered the art of creating atmosphere and tone, but not tension, and the movie feels meandering and slow at times, since audiences are not invested in anyone’s survival. Even Anne, who is devastated by the loss, is dealing with a lot of other distractions, and in her drive to make something of this substance, she starts to incorporate details of the police investigation into her next project, “Homocidal.”

Compared with the relatively intellectual “You and the Night,” in which attendees at an orgy are given to long philosophical discourses explaining their sex drives, “Knife + Heart” feels like a far more conventional genre effort, and yet, it’s still padded with monologues and what feels like fantasy sequences – as in a strange scene in which Anne organizes a picnic for the entire troupe, which has by now expanded to include trans performers (an essential component of Gonzalez’s queer worldview) and an endearing if grotesque-looking fluffer (Pierre Pirol) known as Bouche d’Or, or the “Mouth of Gold,” who’s so delighted to be of service that he performs his job for free.

As the murders mount and the police prove ineffectual, Anne sets to trap for the killer, arranging to casting for her next film that, had she only given it to a moment’s thought, would obviously entail sacrificing several more of her team. When the explanation of the murderer’s motives finally arrives, it’s deeply unsatisfying (more interesting would be someone from within Anne’s entourage) but also that relief that Gonzalez has subverted the homophobic trope of branding gay characters as freaks – here, it is the self-hating character who is treated as the outsider.

No Manches Frida 2  Full Film Review:

The Riviera Nayarit will serve as the location for the filming of sequel to the movie No Manches Frida, starring Martha Higareda and Omar Chaparro, which will be screened in early 2019 in 1,500 theaters around Mexico, several countries in Latin America, and in the United States. Filming begins on May 6th in Punta de Mita.

Producers Argüelles, Lebrija, Allen, and Higareda met at the W Punta de Mita hotel to scout the facilities, as they expect to shoot 70% of No Manches Frida 2 in that location, with the balance shot in Mexico City and Puerto Vallarta. The film will be distributed by Pantelion and Videocine.

The first part of No Manches Frida hit the screens in 2016 to considerable acclaim, which led to this sequel. The movie tells the story of “Zequi,” to thief who once out of jail decides to return to get the money he buried with his accomplice in an empty lot-which is now the site of the gymnasium for the Frida Kahlo Institute junior high school . The thief signs on as a substitute teacher, but in order to get what he needs to have deal with fellow teacher “Lucy” and a handful of rebellious students.

Mauricio Argüelles commented they hope to repeat the success of the first movie with this sequel, which is why they have already signed on the starring couple, as well as Regina Pavón and Mario Morán, and Vallarta actor Aarón Díaz.

According to Martha Higareda, though, they have also secured the participation of the children from the 4th B class-who are now in the 5th B class-to play the same characters they did in the first part; The participation of a seasoned actress was also secured, although she declined to give her name, saying that “growing up, I was one of her biggest fans.”

The shoot will take place over a total of seven weeks in locations in the Riviera Nayarit mainly at the W Punta de Mita hotel with its original design, inspired by the Huichol culture and its unparalleled magic.

The actress states she was very pleased to be shooting in the Riviera Nayarit and to be a sort of “ambassador” with each of the movies she produces and or stars in.

“Movie magic is beautiful, as is the case of No Manches Frida, where we shot on location at a tourism destination. The movie travels around and will be shown in Mexico, the United States, and in different countries around Latin America. “

“It’s always been a very important personal mission to be able to share stories with a universal message that are also set in some of the most beautiful locations in our country-and then share them around the world (…) So whenever possible when I ‘m either producing or acting in a movie, I always say’ let’s shoot it and showcase the best our country has to offer. ‘

Higareda shared that once the filming began they will be hiring locals for secondary roles or as extras, as well as for work behind the cameras. Not only that, but a movie of the scale of No Manches Frida will always bring people, who will eat at the restaurants or visit local businesses.

“This is a great opportunity for those girls and boys who have either dreamed of being in acting or who love the cinema and want to know what goes on behind the cameras. It’s very important to hire local people, because there are a lot of hard working, talented people here, “she added.

Finally, the actress-who made her name with Amar te Duele, Así del Precipicio, and Niñas Mal, and who recently entered the Netflix market with Altered Carbon-still finds joy in the smaller things of life, such as “standing in front of this amazing ocean and watching a gorgeous sunset; this is what we need to put on the big screen and show everywhere so people come and visit Mexico. “

Dancing with the Stars’ Peta Murgatroyd is ditching the ballroom for the big screen in 2018. Deadline announced today that Murgatroyd has landed her first acting gig in a faith-based family film called Faith, Hope & Love.

Murgatroyd will star as Faith Turley, a recently divorced woman whose troubles are compounded by the fact her dance studio is in jeopardy of being shut down. Needing money, Faith enters “Pro and a Schmo” dance contest where she partners with Jimmy Hope (Robert Krantz). It is this partnership that leads Faith to begin to rediscover her faith in life, love and the pursuit of her dreams.

This role sounds like the perfect opportunity for Murgatroyd to show off her acting chops as well as her dancing abilities. She’ll likely have a good partner in Krantz too, who is not stranger to the dance floor. Do not believe us? Just check out his 1999 film, Do You Want to Dance?

There’s no news yet as to the filming of this movie will interfere with Dancing with the Stars, but if the two productions overlap, Murgatroyd might have to stick to the ensemble numbers instead of being a full-time pro.

Murgatroyd is not the first DWTS pro to transition to acting. Both Derek and Julianne Hough, as well as Mark Ballas, have successfully transitioned into acting. And Murgatroyd did appear opposite her husband Maks Chmerkovskiy in the Broadway dance showcase Burn the Floor.

Faith, Hope & Love is currently for a November 2018 release.

Film Review:

The Orchard has released the trailer for The Hummingbird Project. The film follows cousins Vincent (Jesse Eisenberg) and Anton (Alexander Skarsgard) who are trying to build a straight fiber-optic cable from Kansas to New Jersey that will give them an edge in high-frequency trading, but they’re pitted against their old boss Eva Torres (Salma Hayek) who’s trying to beat them at their own game.

The film looks fun for what it is even if it does not leave much of an impact. It’s the kind of thing where you wish it was based on a true story because as fiction, it does not seem outlandish enough to warrant much interest. Still, I like putting Eisenberg, Skarsgard, and Hayek together to see what happens, and there’s nothing wrong with some light entertainment. The Hummingbird Project did not really make waves when it played at TIFF last year, but it could still be a perfectly serviceable movie.

The Hummingbird Project “feels so much like it’s” inspired by true events “- a claim that tends to get hung on even the most outlandish genre exercise these days – viewers may have to keep reminding themselves that Kim Nguyen’s latest feature is in fact entirely fictive .

Recalling “Social Network” in that it once again casts Jesse Eisenberg as the engine behind a high-stakes, e-commerce-driven project – with a dweebified Alexander Skarsgård as his code-writing cousin – this is an entertaining vehicle for vivid performances by both actors. Yet, though the film shows signs of wanting to demonstrate the folly of an ever-faster-paced world in which people lose sight of life’s truer values, the message is a submerged in a family tale of entrepreneurial striving against impossible odds.

With a narrative of this nature, the lack of a true-story hook could be hobble promotional efforts and awards please, though, reviews should be strong enough to help boost a picture whose central quest – efforts to build a fiber-optic tunnel – does not comprise the sexiest movie pitch.

The tunnel is the brainchild of Vincent (Eisenberg) and Anton (Skarsgård), cousins of Russian-Jewish heritage who live in New York City and otherwise work for the ruthlessly demanding Eva Torres (Salma Hayek), a Wall Street CEO. Technology has reached a point where billions of dollars can ride on getting information just at a bit bit ahead of a competitor: If fiber-optic cable were laid from a core exchange in Kansas to the Street’s New Jersey data bank, and if brilliant coder Anton could reduce communication time by a millisecond or so – the speed of a hummingbird’s single wing-beat – the cousins would be (at least temporary) kings of the financial sector, and set for life.

They’re not about to share their idea with the all-controlling Eva, so eleven they’ve secured a chief engineer (played by Michael Mando) and principal financier (Frank Schorpion) for the massive project, they submit their resignations. Infuriated by the defection, she dogs them with spies and legal threats. But equally daunting are the practical obstacles that beset the absurdly ambitious and risky undertaking – from gaining permission to dig narrow tunnels under national parks, private homes, swamps, mountains and the fields of resistant fraction of a second.

Skarsgard, almost unrecognizable as the stooped, balding Anton, goes to the brink of caricature with his amusingly stereotypical brainiac turn; the character is such a socially inept geek it’s a wonder I have an attractive wife (Sarah Goldberg) and kids. Pushing past the point of caricature is Hayek, who does not shrink from putting a touch of glam camp on her villainess. Supporting turns are more realistically grounded, notably Mando’s rock-steady engineer.

But it’s Eisenberg who lends the film its most human notes. What starts out as another motormouthed hustler act – a less sociopathic spin on his “Social Network” interpretation – hits a major speed bump as Vincent gets some serious health news midway through the proceedings. Choosing to keep things to himself, since the project will likely flounder without him, I have suffers in a pained silence that provides the movie’s only real poignancy.Though shot in Canada, “The Hummingbird Project” does a convincing enough job of evoking to sprawl of local American, with much of the action taking place on tunnel sites that lend to welcome emphasis on diverse, often spectacular landscapes. This very different story for globetrotting Quebecois Nguyen feels more impersonal in some ways than such prior features as the Oscar-nominated “Rebelle” or last year’s “Eye on Juliet,” but it retains his sharp sense of empathy – and grasp of pacing and character – within the potentially too-wonky thematic framework.

Robert Redford may or may not be retiring from acting, but he’s keeping busy behind the camera, executive producing an inspiring horse drama starring Red Sparrow’s Matthias Schoenaerts. In The Mustang, Schoenaerts stars as a violent, unhinged convict who undergoes a unique state-mandated rehabilitation program that teaches him to tame wild horses.

MOVIE INFO:

The era of the modern horse film gallops on, with no signs of slowing down. With Chloé Zhao’s “The Rider” recently named Film Comment’s top movie of the year and Andrew Haigh’s “Lean on Pete” landing on more than a few critics’ end-of-year lists, it seems the special bond between a man and his horse continues to captivate indie filmmakers.

The newest entry into this growing canon is “The Mustang,” a sensitive drama from executive producer Robert Redford that will premiere at the next year’s Sundance Film Festival before a spring release from Focus Features.

Film Review:

The official synopsis reads: “Roman (Matthias Schoenaerts), a convict in a rural Nevada prison who struggles to escape his violent past, is required to participate in an ‘outdoor maintenance’ program as part of his state-mandated social rehabilitation. Spotted by a no-nonsense veteran trainer (Bruce Dern) and helped by an outgoing fellow inmate and trick rider (Jason Mitchell), Roman is accepted into the selective wild horse training section of the program, where he finds his own humanity in gentling an especially unbreakable mustang. “The Mustang” is the feature directorial debut of French actress-turned-director Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre. She co-wrote the script with frequent Brady Corbet collaborator Mona Fastvold, as well as Brock Norman Brock, who wrote the script for Nicolas Winding-Refn’s “Bronson” with Tom Hardy.

Best known for his work in indies like “Bullhead” and Jacques Audiard’s “Rust and Bone,” Belgian Schoenaerts recently appeared in “Red Sparrow” and “The Danish Girl.” After a long and fruitful television career, a role in a critically lauded indie could add a shot of adrenaline to a movie career for co-star Connie Britton.

Roman Coleman (Matthias Schoenaerts) is the kind of man who would get into a fistfight with a horse. In fact, that’s exactly what the bald-headed bruiser does the first time he’s placed in a round pen with the unruly mustang who has been assigned to tame and prepare for auction. Never mind that the stallion weighs upwards of 1,000 pounds, or – for that matter – that horses do not have fists; Roman only knows how to express himself through violence. That’s why he’s been locked up in the Northern Nevada Correction Center for the better part of a decade, and why his long prison stint has been interrupted by stretches of solitary confinement.

“I’m not good with people,” Roman growls at the prison psychologist (Connie Britton) who tries to help ease him back into the general population. It would not seem that better with animals. And yet, he recognizes himself in that one rambunctious bronco; I can not help but relate to another living creature who puts up that much of a fight. And over the course of Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre’s poetic and elementary feature debut, these two feral beasts will take each other as best they can.

It’s never easy to break a wild animal, but the prologue of Clermont-Tonnerre’s film wordlessly expresses how difficult it can be, as a (very) low-flying helicopter is used to steer the herd into a small pen, its blades slicing through the air just a few mere feet away from so many unkempt manes. It’s a visceral introduction – our first glimpse of the rugged Mountains that cradle the jail and cut it off from the world – and one that conveys the raw energy that’s contained by any kind of prison.

It’s the kind of barely suppressed power that Schoenaerts has embodied since his breakout performance in “Bullhead” – even in his more docile roles he often seems as though he’s threatening to burst out of his own skin. Clermont-Tonnerre’s script, co-written with Mona Fastvold and Brock Norman Brock, taps right in that impotent rage, while also reducing Roman to a little kid who is not in control of his own emotions. It seems like a minor miracle every time he manages to grimace through an interaction without hurting himself or someone else; each instance is as warmly unnatural as the scene where a severe thunderstorm rolls over the yard, forcing all of the horses into the prison’s kitchen for safety. Schoenaerts has never been better.

This is a short but patient film that is filled with evocative imagery and always fully invested in the moment at hand (at one point, the entirety of “The National Anthem” plays as the camera watches the prisoner bristle under their tense riders), it’s easy to forgive a very spare narrative that does not always earn the change it claims to instigate in its characters.

“The Mustang” is much stronger at the start and the finish – at the extremes of its emotions – than at the navigating between them. The first scene between Roman and the horse he later names Marquis is especially powerful. It almost feels like an homage to the opening bit from “Jurassic Park,” as the stallion is stuck inside of a dark enclosure and doing serious damage to anyone dumb enough to get too close.

The prisoner is so obviously electrified by that anger that the old coot who runs the program (to delightfully abrasive Bruce Dern) insists that he is a part of it. If Roman can break this horse, maybe he’ll be able to break himself. Judging by the way I have snaps at his pregnant teenage daughter (“Blockers” star Gideon Adlon), I have a long way to go.

Film Review:

In March, there is going to be a host of new content on Netflix, both originally produced and from other production companies. Here are some of the series and movies you need to keep your eye out for.

Streaming service Netflix had a great run at the recent Oscars 2019 ceremony, mostly thanks to Alfonso Cuarón’s Roma. In March, there is going to be a host of new content on Netflix, both originally produced and from other production companies. Here are some of the series and movies you need to keep your eye

Delhi Crime: Starring Shefali Shah and Adil Hussain in pivotal roles, this series is a dramatized version of Delhi police investigation into the horrific 2012 Delhi gang rape. The seven-episode series premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. It is directed by Indo-Canadian filmmaker Richie Mehta. It will stream on Netflix from March 22.

Triple Frontier: This film looks more studio-caliber than any other film Netflix has produced. The cast for Triple Frontier consists of Ben Affleck, Oscar Isaac, Charlie Hunnam, Garrett Hedlund and Pedro Pascal. The trailer promises an action-packed film that has been used by US special forces looking to rob a drug baron using the skills they learned in the armed forces. The film releases on March 13.

Turn Up Charlie: The last time Idris Elba collaborated with Netflix, it was for Cary Fukunaga’s Beasts of No Nation, in which he played a sadistic, brutal warlord who runs an army of child soldiers in an unnamed African country. Turn Up Charlie’s content is less, let’s say, serious. The synopsis says Elba plays “a struggling DJ and eternal bachelor, who is given a final chance at success when he reluctantly becomes a manny to his famous best friend’s problem-child daughter.” The series premieres on March 15.

Get Out: Jordan Peele’s Get Out, for which the director won Best Original Screenplay Oscar, scared people because he has ghosts; It was scary because it brought in focus the thing that most Americans do not like to talk about – casual racism. The film will begin streaming from March 24.

Wonder Woman: DC Extended Universe’s biggest domestic box office hit yet, Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman broke new ground in terms of a female-led superhero movie being released as the major commercial studio film, and went on to break multiple box office records. It was also a fantastic film, harkening back to 1978’s Superman than any of the modern films from that genre. It will stream on Netflix from March 2.

Inglorious Basterds: Considered one of Quentin Tarantino’s best films, Inglorious Basterds is based on a fictional team of Jewish American soldiers who go on a spree of killing and scalping German soldiers during World War II. More than anything, the film acts like a catharsis. In a typical Tarantino fashion, the film does not take anything seriously on the surface.

But also like other Tarantino movies, it takes a devilish delight in violence and despite the apparent frivolity, has a realistic depiction of Jewish plight. It will arrive on March 26.

Film Review:

Jia Zhang-ke was never going to make a conventional jianghu underworld movie, and even if genre elements and hard-edged character are woven into Ash Is Purest White, this typically unhurried, long-span drama is very much of a piece with the Chinese auteur’s contemplative body of work. Starting in 2001 and ending on a melancholy New Year’s Eve that ushers in 2018, the film provides a transfixing leading role for Jia’s wife and indispensable muse Zhao Tao. She plays a woman from a dying coal-mining town in love with a local mobster, their complicated relationship unfolding against the backdrop of a country changing at a dizzying pace.

The evolution of contemporary China, of course, has always been Jia’s central theme as tradition has made way for modernity, bringing both losses and gains, while Western influences and technology have pierced cultural insularity. That canvas is more casually observed here than in some of the director’s earlier films, many of which find direct echoes – the surreal UFO element of Still Life; The three-part structure of Mountains May Depart – in a discursive drama that should please amateurs of Jia’s distinctive work though perhaps contains too many cryptic detours for wider exposure.

The film opens with digital video footage shot in 2001 in Jia’s northwest home province of Shanxi, showing a baby girl in USA dungarees unsmilingly surveying a busload of chain-smoking miners. At the same time, the swelling score blends traditional themes with modern electronic sounds and a touch of ceremonial drumming. This is the new China, or at least it was at the start of the 21st century.

Zhao seems to have stepped right out of her role in 2002’s Unknown Pleasures to play Qiao, a local beauty who takes no crap from the men that frequent the gambling den in the back of a nightclub dominated by the presence of her boyfriend Guo Bin (Liao Fan from Berlin festival winner Black Coal, Thin Ice). While everyone else is busy sucking up to Bin, Qiao is a woman who refuses to be intimidated by the male environment; she greets Bin with a sharp but affectionate bite on the shoulder and gives playful thumps to the regulars in a scene that instantly establishes the character as not worth decorative prop.

It’s Qiao, not Bin, who leads to celebratory toast to “the brotherhood,” and it’s the spouse of the time-honored jianghu codes of loyalty and righteousness that will outlast the convictions of her partner.

Qiao confidently straddles the divide between traditional values and the less marginalized status of the modern Chinese woman. She shows loving concern for her aging father, who rails drunkenly against threats to mineworker job security, but turns spiky with anyone lacking respect for Bin. And while she struts her stuff in a fun formation routine to The Village People’s “YMCA” (in Mountains, it was the Pet Shop Boys cover of “Go West”), she deems ballroom dancing “too Western” for her taste. But that and animal documentaries are the pet fixes of Bin’s senior associate, a crooked property developer who disappears way too soon at the hands of a rival gang.

When Bin is targeted by a group of young thugs on motorcycles – a violent action set piece that is easily the most exhilarating sequence – Qiao saves him from being beaten to death by firing warning shots from the Chekhovian gun prominently featured in earlier scenes. Her refusal to incriminate her boyfriend as the illegal weapon’s owner gets her a five-year prison sentence.

The movie’s midsection then shifts upon Qiao’s release in 2006 to the Three Gorges area as she sails down the Yangtze River looking at villages destined to disappear underwater in a planned hydroelectric dam project. Again, evidence of a vanishing China. No doubt feeling guilty about his failure to visit his in prison, Bin blocks his calls and sends other people to convey the news that he’s moved on. But Qiao wants to hear it from his lips.

In the meantime, she gets robbed of her cash and ID card, but in a wryly funny series of scenes, she makes use of skills she picked up around the prison yard to get back on her feet, starting by crashing a wedding to get a meal . The funniest of her scams involves spotting likely philanderers and bilking them for cash during family festivities at a banquet hall. The tone then shifts from amusing to mournful when she finally gets to confront Bin, in an exquisite extended scene that’s all the more affecting for its stillness and quiet.

The final section jumps ahead almost to the present day, with Qiao returned to Shanxi running to gambling house of her own, to survivor and yet an eternal outsider in this strange new world. Bin’s greatly reduced circumstances send him back to him, but while she claims to feel nothing for him, her humanity renders her unable to derive pleasure from his misfortunes. The wrap-up is somewhat protracted and seems poised to end more than once, but as always with Jia’s films, I have packs such soulfulness into the conclusion that any digressions can be forgiven.

This latest feature is Jia’s first shot by regular cinematographer Yu Lik Wai. Noted French d.p. Eric Gautier steps in with assurance, fluidly integrating footage from different generation DV cameras that allow the visual textures to change with the passing of the years. Gautier has a sharp eye for bold splashes of scorching color, but the look of the film is generally composed, almost understated, lending gorgeous scope to the occasional panoramic shots of landscapes or architecture.

The performances of the two leads are riveting. Liao initially projects a cool authority but is warm and at times almost deferential with Qiao, suggesting an understanding between the two that renders thoughts of marriage irrelevant. Even later, when experience has soured Bin, there’s a molten core beneath his abrasive manner. And Zhao virtually assembles a mini-retrospective of her roles for Jia, referencing many of her earlier characters in ways both subtle and direct, while bringing inscrutable grit that quietly evokes the tough broads of 1940s Hollywood. Their partnership is one of the great husband-and-wife collaborations of contemporary world cinema.
